Constructivism vs Direct Instruction

August 12th, 2008  Tagged ,

Paul’s post on Constructionism – here we go again  provided an interesting alternative to the pro-constructivist/constructionist view being pushed at UTS.

He says about constructionism: ”We let children draw their own conclusions. I like that. And then we spend the rest of the lesson correcting faulty conclusions and assumptions.”

I agree. That’s why we need a blend of constructivist and direct instruction approaches.  Constructionism and constructivism will fail if we expect students to reinvent the wheel as they learn through experience.  However direct instruction will fail if we expect students to be able to understand something just by being told.

How about a bit of balance?
